Can you hike to the toe of the glacier for free?
Yes. A short marked trail leads from a parking area to a viewpoint near the toe, taking about an hour round trip, and it is free. It brings you close to the ice and past the dated retreat markers, but it ends at a safety barrier: you are not permitted to step onto the glacier itself from here.
It is the best free thing to do at the icefield, and the markers make it quietly moving. Why is the glacier ice so blue?

How do you get to the Athabasca Glacier?
